SS Greenlight Racing
November 15th, Memphis Motorsports Park. Sean Murphy had a chance to win one of the largest payouts in Late Model history during Saturdays running of the ASA Late Model Kings Ransom 300 at Memphis. The 22-year old driver from Ft. Lauderdale, FL needed to win the third leg of the O’Reilly’s Triple Crown Challenge to secure the $100,000 bonus prize.
Steve Carlson who traveled from his home in Western Wisconsin had one thing on his mind and that was to be crowned the “King of the Short tracks” and in doing so, to block Murphy from the six-figure bonus. Carlson dominated the field of 30 of the best short trackers in the country to take home the crown and leave Murphy one spot short of the big payday.
Murphy qualified the #32 ASI LIMITED; Akzo Nobel; Spectrum Metal Chevy third out of 36 cars that took time on Saturday morning, giving him a great starting position for the 300-lap event on the three-quarter mile speedway. At the drop of the flag Murphy raced hard to hold track position while working a tight race car and was in the 4th position at the end of the first 100-lap segment when a competition caution came out for the teams to make adjustments and bolt on a fresh set of Hoosiers.
Sean continued to run strong keeping the #32 ASI LIMITED; Akzo Nobel; Spectrum Metal Chevy within the top-five throughout the second 100-lap segment though the tight condition still existed. Crew Chief Butch Miller made several more adjustments to improve the handling of Murphy’s mount during the second competi-tion caution following lap 200 and this allowed Murphy to work his way toward the front and contend for the big bonus but fell one spot short of catching Carlson whom had dominated after taking the race lead on lap 40.
“We just got beat by a faster car,” Murphy said. “We were pretty much tight all day. Butch kept working at it and we got it pretty decent at the end but there was no way to catch Carlson.”
Murphy was pleased with the effort of his SS Green Light team. “I have enjoyed running the SS Green Light guys again this year,” he said. “I wish we could go race again next weekend.”
SS Green Light Racing crew chief Butch Miller could not say enough about his young driver, “Sean has done a great job for us over the last couple seasons. He drove a great race today, he gave us 100% and I mean 100%. I don’t think he made one mistake today.” Miller added, “We had the car too tight to start and I should have made one more adjustment to give him a shot at the win. Carlson just had everyone covered.”
The second place run was a solid finish to a great year for the SS Green Light Racing team who finished third in the 2008 ASA Late Model Challenge Series point standings following a fourth place finish in 2007. Murphy tied for the series lead the series with three victories and scored four wins overall.
The team will announce its plans for the 2009 ASA Late Model Series in the coming weeks.

ASA Late Model Series
MILLINGTON, TN—Ask anyone in the northern half of the United States. They’ll surely tell you in their mind who is one of the true kings of short track racing. Saturday at Memphis Motorsports Park, the rest of the country found out about what the Midwest has long known.
It’s tough to beat Steve Carlson.
The West Salem, Wisconsin driver earned the title King of the Short Tracks by commanding the 30 car field and taking his second ASA Late Model Series feature win of the year in the Inaugural Kings Ransom 300. Carlson started fifth, and moved to the lead at lap 40. Despite several challenges throughout, Carlson stood tall and captured the win.
Columbus, Ohio’s Robbie Pyle led the field to the Green Flag and controlled the early circuits of the race. Pyle would be quickly pursued by Minnesota’s Trent Snyder however for the top spot. Snyder would dash to the lead and looked as if he may dance away from the field early on.
But Snyder would fall off the pace slightly and by lap 35, Carlson had advanced to the back bumper of Snyder. Carlson would take the lead on lap 40 and hold on till the end.
Several drivers would dice behind Carlson, including Sean Murphy. Murphy, eligible for the OReilly Triple Crown $100,000 bonus if he could win the 300 lapper, would have to settle for the second spot. Wisconsin youngster Blake Brown, driving for TD Racing and Crew Chief Howie Lettow came home with a very impressive third. Polesitter Pyle would settle for fourth and Illinois driver Michael Bilderback would turn in an impressive fifth place finish.
Third generation driver Ross Kenseth would move his car to second by mid race, but issues with his #25 regulated him to a 14th place finish, 4 laps down.
ASA Late Model Series North Champ Eddie Hoffman fought an ill handling car and overcame a flat tire with a seventh place run.
And ASA Late Model Series Challenge Champ Peter Cozzolino would find the concrete on lap 236 and end up a disappointing 20th.
The Kings Ransom 300 concludes the ASA Late Model Series 2008 season. It was a great, fun filled, action packed year. And the entire organization can’t wait to see you at the races in 2009!

Jacob Goede doesn’t quite match the late model racing mold of big rigs and enormous budgets. It isn’t that he wouldn’t like to have the modern luxuries afforded to many teams, he simply doesn’t need them to win. The Minnesota driver is just fine with the volunteers who help him race every week and the 1 ton pickup truck that gets him there. Jacob Goede is cut from a different cloth, one where hard work, education, patience and respect on the race track prevail. The mechanical engineering degree he possesses certainly doesn’t hurt either.
Racing has been a part of the Goede family all of Jacob’s life. His father was a dirt track champion in Minnesota during the 1990’s. Racing on a budget has also consistently been a part of the Goede family success. After finishing photographs in the winner’s circle, a young Goede would regularly walk the track searching for tear-offs in good enough condition for his father to use the next week.
As Jacob’s age and interest in auto racing progressed, an intense curiosity developed. As fascinated as he was in going fast, he was equally as fascinated in knowing how to go faster. Beginning his career in quarter midgets, the driving talent became immediately evident as the young Goede won a track championship in his first season. Jacob Goede’s quest for knowledge was only beginning. While other youngsters were content with playing with friends, Jacob was on a mission. He wanted to know every single detail of what made his car go and go faster.
Fast forward to age 16. Now a junior in high school, the desire for Jacob to advance his racing career had grown stronger than ever. Late model racing was the obvious step; however the Goede family made a decision against the modern grain of driver development. Jacob’s father limited his on track time to practice only during his first year behind the wheel of the late model. The young driver needed time to mature.
Once he was given the green light, Jacob moved directly to the Late Model division at the Elko and finished 12th in points his rookie season. In 2003, he finished 5th in points also at Elko while winning the tracks Most Improved driver honors. He followed his 2003 season with a sixth place showing in 2004. During a very successful 2005 season, Goede won three features at the Elko Speedway, in Elko, Minnesota as well as one feature win at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Goede also finished second in the season long championship points chase at Elko to eventual track champion, Donny Reuvers by just 36 markers
Jacob Goede made limited appearances in 2006 in the ASA Late Model Series, but it was during the 2007 season with the series that we all knew we had someone in our midst that was more than most. Jacob won both Iowa Speedway and Bristol Speedway competing with some of the best late model drivers in the country at two of the fastest tracks. Goede recorded four top five finishes and two Fast Qualifier Awards during his 2007 part time stint with the ASALMS.
Jacob Goede and his team decided in 2008 that they needed to run for a Championship, the chose to compete in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division. This was one place where Jacob could really showcase his amazing abilities. The series went to some of the top short tracks in the country and the competition was against some of the most talented drivers. The 2008 season was probably one of the toughest battles of a life time for Jacob and it was one that meant the world to him.
Jacob went into the last event on September 6th at Gateway International Speedway with the point’s lead, but he did not come out with a title. Jacob with just laps to go was caught up in a spin that caused him to lose the 2008 Championship that he had fought so hard for. For Jacob and his team this was devastating, they had put all they had and more into this; they gambled and they lost.
For Jacob Goede and his team, the future may be uncertain, but life can be unpredictable. There were many who saw Jacob and were amazed by him, many that still have not forgotten him. To use the old clichéd phrase ‘The Real Deal’ may be most appropriate, because his is. This is a team with the raw talent to race and to win, the money may not trail in his wake but the rest of the package does.
Jacob is truly a diamond in the rough and when someone does decide to look just a bit closer they could find themselves with one of the best gems in the industry. The driver who built his platform on character and determination has captured the hearts of all of us. No treasure remains buried forever and stars can’t help but to shine.

Elwood, Illinois (Monday, November 10, 2008): No matter how the last race of the 2008 racing season plays out, 2008 USPRO Cup Series Champion, Dave Gentile Jr., has already had a career year and a very bright future to look forward too.
His first career series Championship in USPRO to go along-with a solid Fifth place finish in the final ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Championship title chase has the Elwood, Illinois driver thinking big as he and his Goodwin Motorsports Team prepare for their last race of the year.
The non-points season finale for the ASA Late Model Series, the King’s Ransom 300 is set for Friday and Saturday, November 14-15, 2008 at the ¾ mile semi-banked paved oval of Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis, Tennessee. The 300-lap Feature will be the longest of his career and he’s excited to say the least about it.
For the first time I will be in a race where we will actually get a break to do something with the car,” Laughed the 31-year-old sophomore pilot; “All of our North races were 100 green flag laps with no break and the USPRO races were even shorter!”
During the 2008 campaign, it was a busy year to say the least for Gentile Jr., and his Goodwin Motorsports crew. The team ran both schedules in the ASALMS Northern Division as well as the USPRO Cup Series.
It was in USPRO where Gentile Jr., scored his first career Feature win. That came at another big track, O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis back on April 26, 2008 in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 50. During the six-race USPRO season, Gentile Jr., never finished outside of the Top Five all year long!
“This has been a great year for us, especially being a brand new team,” Explained the Prairie State driver. “We had our ups and downs for sure, but all and all a Top Five finish in the North is not bad. The USPRO championship was an added bonus. I’m looking forward to going down to Memphis, a big track and a lot of laps.”
Gentile Jr., is also very appreciative of the opportunity he’s had this season; “I also want to thank Brandon and LeeAnn Goodwin for giving me this opportunity of a lifetime to drive for them.”
“I also have to thank my entire crew for there hard work and dedication this year, that is what made this a successful year.” He appreciatively added. “Finally, last but certainly not least, I need to say thanks to Ashley for all her help and support this season.” He ended.
For the King’s Ransom 300, Gentile Jr.’s familiar Blue and White #6 Chevrolet Impala will carry primary sponsorship from the Plantation Oaks Inn and Suites. In addition, WMC Inc, ARP Bodies, Bull Frog Sun Block, and Swift Springs will also have decals on the side of the Goodwin Motorsports entry.
