Clean Sweep for 15-year-old Brett Moffitt at I-70 Speedway.

Posted May 6th, 2008

15-year-old Brett Moffitt, a contender for the 2008 ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Rookie of the Year title, won the Season Opener for I-70 Late Models at the famed I-70 Speedway on Saturday, May 3, 2008. It was Moffitt’s first ever appearance at the wicked fast high-banks in Odessa, Missouri. (PictureMeRacing.com Photo)

By 5K Motorsports/High Groove Marketing and Chuck Stowe/Karl Chevrolet

West Bend, Wisconsin (Tuesday, May 6, 2008): Forty Laps of Late Model action saw yet another young gun from the state of Iowa take his first ever checkered flag on the famed I-70 Speedway high banks.

15-year-old Brett Moffitt from Grimes, Iowa piloting the 5K Motorsports prepared, Karl Chevrolet crate engine powered, late model would set quick time for the night.

That time would also turn out to be a new track record on the American Racer I-70 track tires. Due to the fact that it was his first trip ever to I-70, Moffitt would have to line up tailback for the 40 lap late model Feature.

At the drop of the green, Mike Vannoy Jr. jumped into the lead as Moffitt and another young gun, Thor Anderson battled behind him. Lap 3 saw an early yellow flag, as Billy Crane, Ron Hartford, Thor Anderson and Moffitt raced nearly 4 wide and ended up spinning down the front stretch.

After the restart and from the rear of the field, Hartford and Vannoy Jr. raced bumper to bumper with Moffitt in tow. By lap 13, Moffitt had worked his way to the third spot. At midway, Hartford and Vannoy Jr. touched causing another spin resulting in them both restarting from the rear.

On lap 34, Moffitt saved a totally sideways race car coming out of turn 4 and it would seem that he would have his first feature win at I-70 wrapped up. However, a lap 39 spin would bring out one last caution, setting up a green-white-checkered race finish.

In the end, the Iowa youngster held off I-70 veteran Ronnie “the Raytown Rocket” Hartford for his first ever win at I-70 Speedway. Vannoy Jr. was third, Caleb Hall was fourth and Elton Rust finished in the fifth spot. Young guns, Moffitt and Vannoy Jr. were fast qualifiers with Vannoy Jr. timing in at 17.53 and Moffitt setting the new Late Model track record with his qualifying lap of 17.22 seconds.

“This is unbelievable” stated a very excited Moffitt from victory lane. “I can’t say enough about the 5K Team and this car and set up that they gave me tonight”! When asked what it meant to win for the first time in a late model on the first night at I70? “It’s great. “I can’t believe it”! Replied the fifteen year old Iowa sensation.

Racinforacure.com enjoys more than ASA Late Model Series racing at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

Veteran ASALMS Driver, Bob Varney prepares to give Wayne Reinitz the ride of his life in the ASALMS Ride-A-Long car at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. (Chuck Gonzalez Photo)

By Matt Prieur-ASA Late Model Series
Lexington, Michigan (Friday, May 2, 2008): There was more than just ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts racing action going on last weekend at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

Oh sure, the racing itself was some of the best in recent memory! But that was secondary for some special guests who came to the Clermont, Indiana speed plant over the weekend. For the racinforacure.com representatives on hand, they got the chance to experience the thrill of a lifetime with rides in the ASALMS Ride-A-Long race car!

Wayne Reinitz, who suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” was a special guest, along-with several others of the racinforacure.com Race Team with driver, Derek Thorn and his Agent, Scott Pfeiffer, who also has ALS but in a more advanced phase!

As part of the guests’ experience, they were all given rides in the ASALMS Ride-A-Long car after Practice on Saturday just prior to Qualifying. The smiles on everyone’s faces as they got out of the car were priceless to say the least!

“What a fantastic weekend! Scott Pfeiffer, Derek Thorn, and the racinforacure team are champions! Becky Roos and myself arrived at O’Reilly Raceway Park at 3:00p.m. rather than 4:00p.m. as we were supposed to. We were a little anxious!” Stated Reinitz.

At every event Thorn races in this season, whether it’s in the ASALMS Challenge Division or the NASCAR Camping World East Series, the racingforacure.com team will always have an honorary pit crew member that has been diagnosed with ALS sitting alongside the team in the pits. For this past weekend at ORP, Mr. Reinitz was that guest!

Ignition Box Failure and Wreck Lead to Tough Night at ORP on Friday for Goodwin Motorsports. Gentile Jr., rebounds to win the USPRO Cup Series Feature on Saturday!

The Goodwin Motorsports Team poses with the first USPRO Cup Series Feature Winner of 2008, Dave Gentile Jr., at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis after the Elwood, Illinois driver won the ASI Limited 50 Presented by Drive Train Specialists. (Chuck Gonzalez Photo)

By Goodwin Motorsports / Dennis Michelsen
Channanhon, Illinois (Thursday, May 1, 2008): Goodwin Motorsports driver, Dave Gentile Jr., took part in the new USPRO Cup Series, which gives drivers a low cost option to be part of the ASA Late Model Series racing scene. Dave Gentile Jr is doing double duty this season racing in the ASALMS Northern and USPRO divisions.

On Saturday night April 26th in the ASI Limited 50 Presented by Drive Train Specialists at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Gentile Jr., had a perfect night! At the top of the speed charts in practice everyone knew Gentile Jr was the driver to beat. Dave posted an impressive time in qualifying grabbing the Drive Train Specialists Fast Qualifier Award.

His time would have been good enough to make the field in the ASALMS Challenge Division despite using bias-ply tires that are much harder with less grip. Gentile Jr started 6th after the invert but quickly piloted his WMC Inc Dream Factory Inc car into contention.

Side-by-side battles with Andy Marchiniak and Chris Koslek thrilled the fans at ORP. Dave held off a frantic charge by fellow Prarie State driver Tom Gille and grabbed the checkered flag for the first time in ASALMS action.

“We came so close to winning last season so this feels great,” said an excited Dave Gentile Jr in Victory Lane. “We’re heading to our home track next so hopefully we can keep our momentum going and have it carry over to the ASALMS Northern Division too.”
